Islamic Art

Islamic art is a part of Islamic culture. It encompasses the visual arts created since the 7th century CE. They were made by people who lived in or were ruled by Muslim populations. They are often combined with Islamic calligraphy and geometric patterns. These styles are found in many media, from small objects in ceramic or metal to large tiling on the outside and inside of buildings, including mosques. Other forms of Islamic art include Islamic miniature painting, as well as artefacts like Islamic glass or pottery. Textile arts, such as carpets and embroidery, are also part of Islamic art.
Geometric Pattern

Islamic geometric patterns are formed from four shapes. They are: circles, squares, stars, and polygons with many sides. The circle and the square are the most basic shapes. The star shape comes from squares or triangles inside a circle. The 8-point star is common in Islamic art.
Arabesque

An arabesque is a pattern of curving lines. It has intertwined vines, leaves, and abstract shapes not found in nature. Decorative arabesque patterns can be found covering the surfaces on buildings like mosques, as well as items like ceramic tiles and glassware.
Calligraphy

Calligraphy the art of writing is a unique feature of Islamic art in that it has been used in astonishingly varied and imaginative ways. The written word appears not just in pen and paper but across all art forms and materials, often giving rise to works of great beauty.
Illumination and Manuscripts

Islamic illumination uses gold to paint geometric and/or biomorphic patterns. These patterns are used to decorate the pages of the Quran and books of poetry. Biomorphic patterns have a geometric grid that is usually hidden with the painting and illuminating.
Architecture

Many Islamic designs are built on squares and circles, typically repeated, overlapped and interlaced to form intricate and complex patterns. A recurring motif is the 8-pointed star, often seen in Islamic tilework; it is made of two squares, one rotated 45 degrees with respect to the other.
Tilework and Mosaics

The geometric patterns in Islamic tile consist of simple shapes that are combined, interlaced, duplicated, and laid out in complex designs. Four basic shapes make up most Islamic tile designs: Circles. Squares and other four-sided polygons. Stars (or triangles and squares arranged in a circle)
